NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Pfizer Inc. said Thursday that it would pay $1.4 billion to settle federal investigations into Pfizer Inc.'s patent litigation related to the drug Celebrex.
The move by the pharmaceutical giant to settle the investigations by agreeing to pay $1.4 billion will allow the drugmaker to make payments in the future to settle potential patent infringement suits brought by Pfizer Inc. in the United States. Pfizer and its pharmaceuticals industry has been accused of using its drugs to boost sales of prescription drugs.
"Today's agreement is the largest pharmaceutical agreement ever struck by an industry with a strong and growing presence in the U. S. market," Pfizer said in a statement.
The company said it is "continuing to pursue and settle pending cases involving the development of Celebrex," and will pay "a total of $2.5 billion to settle pending litigation involving Pfizer Inc.'s Celebrex," the statement said.
